Beethoven’s triumphantly brilliant symphony and an instantly popular 21st-century concerto with soloist Kirill Gerstein in the spotlight.
At the first performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No 7, the crowd demanded an immediate encore of the astonishingly beautiful second movement. 21st-century listeners may be familiar with its stirring melody from the climactic moment of the film The King’s Speech. Beethoven himself wrote that this ‘Grand Symphony in A’ was ‘one of my very best’. To hear it live is a thrilling experience.
This performance opens with the delightful romp of Bartók’s Divertimento and Thomas Adès’ stylish, entertaining Concerto for Piano and Orchestra.
Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor Designate, and the LSO bring out the inspiration and passion of these rewarding works. Adès’ concerto was composed with Kirill Gerstein in mind – this is the performance you want to hear live.
