Carmen

The Royal Opera presents a searing revival of Bizet’s Carmen, restoring the raw passion and simmering tension that first scandalized audiences. Damiano Michieletto’s naturalistic staging transports us to a gritty Spanish town, where the fearless Carmen (Aigul Akhmetshina) ensnares the dutiful police officer Don José (Piotr Beczala). Tormented by duty and consumed by desire, Don José sacrifices everything, his respectable career, his family's wishes, and the devoted Micaëla, to flee into a life of crime with Carmen and her smuggler allies. But when the celebrated toreador Escamillo captures Carmen's heart, her longing for independence resurfaces, and Don José’s possessive jealousy erupts into a dangerous spiral. Under conductor Antonello Manacorda, the Royal Opera Orchestra infuses Bizet’s iconic score with electrifying intensity, from the sultry "Habanera" to the explosive "Toreador Song." Experience Carmen as it seduces, grips, and triumphs on the main stage.
