The Day of the Sardine

Themes of disaffection and identity are explored in this powerful novel, which follows the life of Arthur Haggerston, a rebellious teenager navigating the challenges of adulthood in a working-class community. The story is set against the backdrop of Newcastle upon Tyne during the early 1960s, a time marked by economic hardship and social unrest. Arthur's journey reflects the struggles of a young workforce trapped in tedious jobs, where street violence and gang warfare become outlets for frustration and discontent.
